The Fifth of November

My mother would recite this to us every November... Today is Guy Fawkes Day

The Fifth of November

Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!

Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England's overthrow.

But, by God's providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James's sake!
If you won't give me one, I'll take two,
The better for me, and the worse for you.

A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn'orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!

Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!

English Folk Verse (c.1870)

Possibly most widely known in America from its use in the movie V for Vendetta, versions of the above poem have been widespread in England for centuries. It celebrates the foiling of Catholic Guy Fawkes's attempt to blow up England's Protestant-controlled House of Parliament on November 5th, 1605. Known as Guy Fawkes Day, Gunpowder Treason Day, Fireworks Night, and Bonfire Night, the November 5th celebrations typically includes the burning of Guy Fawkes in effigy.

Hmmmmm... another example of celebrating racism/ bigotry/ intolerance, but it is good to know the history of such things and learn from it, n'est pas?

Here's an interesting article from The Sun : CLICK HERE

They usually have bonfires in the BVI (everyone loves an excuse to party) but it is a rainy day.

It's Friday, and the 13th

Yes, it is Friday the 13th but don't worry, focus on something else.

How about the fact that it is National Scrabble Day? I play Scrabble on my tablet a few times a day so I will definitely be celebrating.

Also, I have noticed that the first Friday 13th of the year is "National Blame Someone Else Day". This holiday began in 1982.

And, it is National Dolphin Day eve.

Enjoy!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

Today, 21 November 2013, is Beaujolais Nouveau Day.

What a day to celebrate!!!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is marked in France on the third Thursday in November with fireworks, music and festivals. Under French law, the wine is released at 12:01 a.m., just weeks after the wine's grapes have been harvested. Parties are held throughout the country and further afield to celebrate the first wine of the season.

Read more about it here: http://www.beaujolaisnouveauday.com/

Do you enjoy wine and French culture?  You might find an all-inclusive charter on a French canal barge interesting... Check out http://www.bargecharters.com

Long weekends... ahhhh

I always dreaded Labor Day because we had to go back to school the next day after having three months off...

What is Labor Day?

For most people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer.

The first Monday of September is set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894.

I'm hoping I can find a decent avocado and whip up some guacamole.

NATIONAL FLIP FLOP DAY

National Flip Flop Day is the 3rd Friday of June which happens to fall on the first day of summer this year, along with Fete de la Musique!
I assume this holiday has to do with footwear, but this blog post on TechDirt demonstrates the flip-floppiness of the US President showing a video back when he was campaigning in 2008 against statements he has made in 2013. Very interesting... sad... disappointing...

I would rather only have to think about flip flops like these :)
