Weathering the weather INVEST 92L

Aargh! This system is still quite far away (850 miles from the Windwards) so a lot can happen between here and there, now and then...

TROPICAL WEATHER DISCUSSION
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
805 AM EDT MON AUG 11 2008

A TROPICAL WAVE LOCATED OVER THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC ALONG 47W OR ABOUT 780 NM EAST OF THE WINDWARD ISLANDS IS SUPPORTING AN AREA OF DISORGANIZED SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FROM 12N-16N BETWEEN 42W-50W. SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWS SCATTERED MODERATE TO ISOLATED STRONG CONVECTION NORTH OF A 1009 MB LOW EMBEDDED ON THE WAVE AXIS NEAR 11N. THIS SYSTEM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS IT MOVES WESTWARD AT ABOUT 10 TO 15 KT.

Portable generator update HONDA EU2000i & All Power 1000W product review

This is an update to our post of March 22, 2008 as many people come into our blog via this post:
New portable generator All-Power 1000W with inverter

While the All Power 1000W portable generator with inverter was relatively inexpensive and locally AVAILABLE (very important), it just didn't have as much oomph as we wanted to run our 24V battery charger and the occasional circular saw usage.

About 2 weeks later, we bit the bullet and bought another HONDA EU2000i from Island Water World in St. Maarten. We were lucky because it was the last one they had on the island!

Still works great, of course. And our modification that we made so we can run the generator off of an external gas tank is wonderful. We have a hooked up to a 3 gallon gas tank which is easy to fill and lasts a long, long time. It's easy to do! Take a look at Bob's Boat Bits Blog and see how you can do this too:

The Gunboat CREAM in St Martin

This morning we had a new neighbor for awhile, the Gunboat catamaran, CREAM. I assume he was in Marigot so he could enter the Simpson Bay Lagoon via the French Sandy Ground bridge as they are actually working on the Dutch bridge.

I thought I'd post this photo because we get lots of hits for people googling the Gunboat catamaran "Looking for Elvis".

Anyway, I'm not sure why it is named CREAM because it is a green boat. The shade of green reminds me of my 1969 Plymouth Fury III, in fact :)

CHARTER YACHT "TOY" SUGGESTIONS

I haven't been horseback riding in almost 30 years. There's just not enough room for a horse aboard our CAL-34 So It Goes... not with two kittens anyway :)

So, how about a Horse Simulator? Still too big for us, but it would be a nifty "toy" for the larger boats at the next charter yacht show!

Horse simulator
The £40,000 virtual reality riding machine combines a mechanical horse with a host of electronic sensors and a screen, to recreate the joys of an outdoor ride without the need for mucking out.
Here's the link to the TELEGRAPH's article: CLICK HERE

Here's another cool item that we saw last month in the Lagoon just inside of Marigot, St. Martin: The BBQ Donut.

BBQ Donut

You can just see the outboard behind the support for the beach umbrella. Perhaps you can use the umbrella as a sail. Have it be a riding sail so the "bow" of the donut is facing into the wind so the smoke from the central BBQ is always blowing "aft". Can you have a bow on a round raft???

I think this would be the perfect complement to the Sail Dive Charter Trimaran PROMENADE, whose "Power Lounger" was the hit of last November's St. Thomas Charter Yacht Show.

Promenades Power Lounger

Just raft those two babies together and you have the makings of an unforgettable party!

Cleaning the BBQ

Cleaning the BBQ is not one of our favorite chores aboard the CAL-34, So It Goes.

Here is a tip that we just read on the blog, Lifehacker...
"Wipe your grill clean without the chemical waste by rubbing an onion against the grate of the grill."
Read the posting: CLICK HERE

I'd go out and try it right now (ya, sure!) but it is raining...

Hope this helps!

Post X-Files Sighting

I went outside last night to cool off a bit after watching two episodes of the X-FILES. I noticed a red glowing light low in the water, just off our port side... Definitely not a light from a passing dinghy... It wasn't moving much, just kind of hovering and bobbing along out there ("the truth is out there")... I told Bob to come look but he couldn't see it... I could though. Are my eyes playing tricks? Is it a problem with my glasses? Whew, he finally saw it and we went out in the dinghy to investigate.

We hunted about but it was nowhere to be seen. Then as we were returning to the boat, there it was... a red light with a weird rattling sound eminating from it. After several passes, I managed to scoop it up in the dinghy bailer. It was a lighted bobber that one of the guys that were fishing off of the rocks must have lost.

The kittens Willow & Buffy think it is really cool.

So do I :)

Working on Yacht Charter Newsletter Blog

We've been busy with lots of things, but lately I've been working on our Paradise Connections Yacht Charters Newsletter blog.

It is a monthly summary of blog postings that are on our All About Yacht Charters blog and our All About Canal Barge Charters blog.

I think the new format works out pretty well... The photos add a bit more interest and taking the time to hand code the tables is really worth it, IMHO... Take a look: CLICK HERE

Feel free to contact us if you are interested in a yacht charter sailing vacation, or perhaps a barge trip in France or other European locations... Doesn't Loch Ness sound enticing??? Especially for New Years... Oops, sorry... should say HOGMANAY!

St Maarten Bridge Closures - Scheduled Maintenance

Well, no work on the Dutch-side St. Maarten (St. Martin) bridge between Simpson Bay and the Lagoon... Wasn't that originally scheduled for June???

Anyway, according to today's local paper (July 23, 2008), work is to begin soon.

Here's a link to the article:

Bridge Open Sandy Ground French St. Martin

Just a quick post to let everyone know that the Sandy Ground bridge on the French side of St. Martin has been repaired and re-opened to normal service on Friday, July 11, 2008.

No news about work on the Dutch bridge yet.... :)

Cat toys

Recently we made an Amazon order as we knew we were going to be in St. Martin for a couple of more weeks and thus have access to mail.

We ordered some books and a few DVDs that had been newly released, plus we bought some CAT TOYS!

Buffy and Willow seemed to appreciate them. The catnip mice are now without tails and each have a felt eye missing. The ball with a bell occasionally gets batted around, but Willow's favorite toy is a 2-foot long piece of light rope, and Buffy loves wire ties... you know, those things plastic things that hold groups of wires together, while larger sizes are used as handcuffs :)

Just reminded me of the Steve Martin routine... "Does anyone know where I can get some cat handcuffs?" I think it was from his album (remember albums?) "A Wild and Crazy Guy (CD)". which you can also get as an MP3 download. I miss albums... the artwork, the liner notes...

So It Goes...

French St Martin Sandy Ground bridge troubles?

We heard that the Sandy Ground bridge on the French side of St. Martin is experiencing problems. We've noticed that it hasn't opened for several days.

- Sandy Ground bridge entering Lagoon from Marigot

But, at least the Dutch bridge is still in normal operation. We passed by the Dutch St. Maarten bridge last Saturday on the way to see a matinee of Hancock (enjoyed it) and we didn't see any obvious signs of work taking place, and we haven't heard any gossip or seen/heard anything on the news.

Friday Cat Blogging - Classic Cat Herding Commercial

This is one of my favorite commercials.... Cat Herding.

My sister-in-law Laura, shared it with me a few years ago. It always makes me laugh. Everyone needs a good laugh.

I was just writing to someone who is trying to put together a large group for a diving yacht charter. I said that I understand her situation and that working with large groups can be like herding cats, which reminded me of this classic video...

So enjoy!

Tropical Storm Bertha 1996 / 2008

Wow, Bertha... again. Bertha was our first named storm when we came to the Caribbean. We put Loose Moose in the Hurricane Hole near Marin, Martinique. We were horrified to see how the bareboat companies brought their boats in and just plopped the anchor over with no regards for their (well, not really the employees' boat so who cares!) boats or other boats anchored there.

Fortunately, with Loose Moose's flat bottom (board up!) we were able to pull ourselves into this little creek at the corner of the hurricane hole. No one could ever come close to us there... except for the creepy spiders and other insects.

Anyway, Bertha of 1996 didn't seem to affect Martinique at all. St. Thomas did get hit and quite a few boats were lost (Hurricane Marilyn was the year before).

But now we have another Bertha. According to the models, it looks like Bertha 2008 will give the Caribbean a pass.

Here's the July 3, 2008 @ 11am EDT 5-day prediction from NOAA

We're not going to let it spoil our 4th of July weekend!

Good page for NOAA tropical weather

This is a page I like to look at for those days where there is a system brewing up in the Atlantic.
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/gtwo_atl.shtml

If you put your mouse over the circled number on the image, a little pop up pops up and gives you the info about that system that appears in their forecast... That info is also mentioned in the text below the graphic.

I like this Atlantic Analysis because it shows isobars, H's, L's,etc:
Other weather links:
Here's wishing everyone a happy and safe summer!
So It Goes...

That little bit of weather coming off Africa

They had the TV on CNN in MacDonald's when we were there yesterday lunchtime. The weatherman seemed very excited about this weather system coming off of Africa. Fortunately the sound wasn't on.

They have a different outlook on potential tropical storms than we do. It gives the weathermen something to do and talk about... It gives cruisers other things to do and talk about :)

This model looks better than the previous one because there was one guy (there's always one) who had it shooting straight across the Atlantic to the islands. I like this picture better, having all the models predicting a turn to the north and out of our way (and hopefully not bothering anyone else, too).

Looking forward to a calm & quiet summer...

Good day for the kittens!

Buffy & Willow really made out today. We went and picked up our mail today and there were cat goodies!!!

I was a bit disappointed with the cat harness/leash combo as it wasn't what I wanted. I wanted a harness that we could put on them while we were sailing and then have an optional leash. Well, the harness has a long "tail" on it that the leash snaps into. It works great for going walkies usage but not just for hanging out, if you know what I mean. Here's a picture of Willow that might give you a better idea.

Perhaps we can modify it somehow. Hmmmm, we need a cunning plan!

... Later that day... Well, I've been pondering this a bit and I think they just have to grow into them a bit. I did buy the large model as their present girth size was the lower value in the size range for the large. If their chests were bigger, then the part that goes around their neck would have to become larger which would make the "leash tail" shorter. So, either they have to get implants or I'll temporarily shorten up the long bit so it won't dangle and get caught on things. Buffy & Willow are only 7 months old and they are still growing like wildfire...

Have a good one... It's FRIDAY!

Interesting ear muffs

Some people have more time on their hands than I do... Or, maybe they have different priorities. That's OK! I really enjoyed this one:

This is from an interesting post from BOING BOING:
Spock ears knitting pattern

So, for those sailing in cooler climes and especially if you are a trekkie, this is a great way to keep your ears warm.

Here's where you can find the instructions:

2008 St Maarten Dutch Bridge Closure UPDATE

Just a quick update (June 25, 2008) that work on the Dutch side bridge in St. Maarten (St. Martin) has not progressed to the point where they will have to implement the scheduled bridge closures as mentioned in our previous post.

This is the Caribbean!

Whenever they get around to it, expect the 3+ weeks of interruptions to the bridge's opening schedule.

Check this out before entering the Simpson Bay Lagoon, especially if your draft will not allow you to exit via the Sandy Ground bridge into Marigot Bay on the French side of St. Martin.

CRUISING WITH PETS - BAHAMAS AND CARIBBEAN

We have been working on a charter where the client wants to bring a small dog with them. We found this article by Carol Bareuther who is a marine journalist, along with being a registered dietician in the USVIs. This information is from the December 2006 issue of All At Sea.

We couldn't get the link to work properly
(http://www.allatsea.net/specificissueeditorial.php?featureid=1105)
so we are posting the whole article because we feel it is very valuable to cruisers with pets, especially since it has contact info for many countries.

Thanks a bunch Carol for this very important information. We really appreciate your efforts.

Travel with Pets in the Bahamas and the Caribbean
From ALL AT SEA (http://www.allatsea.net)

by Carol Bareuther
December 2006 Issue

Cruising down the Caribbean island chain can be anything but carefree when you’re traveling with a pet. Each island is a nation unto itself with specific requirements for pets if, that is, the pet wants to put its paws ashore. Here’s what you need to know before you go:

ANGUILLA
Pets are allowed to enter with a permit. At least six months prior to your arrival, contact the Anguilla Agriculture Department, Tel: (264) 497-2615, or Email: agri@anguillanet.com, between 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon or from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays for information about how to obtain this permit.

ANTIGUA/BARBUDA
An import permit must be obtained from the Chief Veterinary Officer. The pet must also be micro-chipped and blood tested for rabies titer at an approved lab. The results should be forwarded to the: Chief Veterinary Officer, P.O. Box 1282, St. John's, Antigua, West Indies, Fax: (268) 460-1759.

BAHAMAS
An import permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry. Applications for the permits, plus a $10 processing fee, must be made in writing to the Bahamas Director of Agriculture, P.O. Box N-3704, Nassau, The Bahamas. Tel: (242) 325-7502 or Fax: (242) 326-3960. For pets coming from the U.S. and Canada, dogs and cats must be: 1) six months of age or older, 2) accompanied by a valid certificate which states that the pet has been vaccinated against rabies within not less than 1 month and not more than 10 months prior to importation, and 3) accompanied by a Veterinary Health Certificate presented within 48 hours of arrival in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to a licensed veterinarian for an examination.

BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
Dogs and cats are permitted entry only after the Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Division issues an import permit. The BVI is a Rabies free territory and in order to protect against the spread of this disease, there are regulations that address pets coming in from countries that are known to have outbreaks of Rabies, such as the U.S. mainland and Canada. Of note is that Caribbean nations such as Anguilla, Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, Montserrat, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the U.S. Virgin Islands are Rabies-free. Find the correct forms in a downloadable form at: www.britishvirginislands.com/ntk_permitspet.htm. For more information, call the Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Division, at: (284) 495-2532.

BARBADOS
An import permit must be obtained from the Chief Veterinary Officer before the importation of all pets. This permit can be obtained by calling Veterinary Services at: (246) 427-5073 or Fax: (246) 420-8444. A Veterinary Officer must examine the animal before it’s allowed to leave the customs area. Dogs and cats need to be free of any communicable disease. If they come from the UK, Ireland, Jamaica, St. Kitts-Nevis, Antigua, St. Lucia or St. Vincent, they may be imported directly. Pets from all other countries must undergo six months quarantine in Britain after which time an import permit can be secured.

DOMINICA
Pets can enter the country if accompanied by a valid Veterinary Health Certificate plus an importation permit from the Veterinary Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Botanical Gardens, Roseau, Commonwealth of Dominica. Tel: (767) 448-0414.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
Pets must have a health certificate issued and signed by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate should contain the name and address of the owner, and complete identification of the animal (name, breed, sex, and age). The pet must also have: 1) been examined within 30 days prior to departure and found to be free of any infectious diseases, and 2) been vaccinated against rabies. The rabies vaccination certificate (which should have been given between one month and 12 months prior to entry) should include the date of vaccination, product name and serial number. For more information, call the Office of Animal Health at: (809) 542-0132.

GRENADA
A health certificate from a veterinarian dated within two weeks of travel. An import permit is also required. The Grenada Tourist Board can fax the permit papers. For more information, call the Veterinary & Livestock Office at: (473) 440-3195 or Fax: (473) 440-4191.

GUADELOUPE
Cats and dogs over three months old are admitted temporarily with certificates of origin and good health (or anti-rabies inoculation), issued by a licensed veterinarian from the country of shipment.

JAMAICA
Animals are not permitted to enter Jamaica without going through quarantine in the UK for six months.

MARTINIQUE
Dogs and cats over three months old are admitted temporarily with certificates of origin and good health (or anti-rabies inoculation), issued by a licensed veterinarian from the country of shipment. For more information, contact: The Capitainerie of Le Marin, Tel: (011 596) 596 74 83 83, Fax: (011 596) 596 74 92 02

PUERTO RICO & THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS
Dogs and cats may enter with a health and inoculation certificate from a veterinarian dated two weeks prior to arrival.

ST. LUCIA
Pets must have a Veterinary Import Permit before they may enter St. Lucia. This can be arranged for by contacting the Ministry of Agriculture’s Veterinary Department. Cats and dogs must also adhere to the following requirements: 1) be electronically identifiable by having had an acceptable type of microchip implanted, 2) be vaccinated against rabies at or over three months of age, 3) travel into St. Lucia, 180 days (six months) after the date the blood sample was taken, and 4) be treated no more than 48 hours before entry into St Lucia with a preparation for the treatment of ticks and fleas and with an anthelmintic preparation. For more information, contact the Chief Veterinary Officer at: Email: chiefvet@slumaffe.org.

ST. MAARTEN
Pets can enter St. Maarten with a health certificate issued by a veterinarian dated less than 10 days prior to departure. The pet must have a rabies vaccination certificate that has been issued between one month and 12 months before entering the island.

ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
Pets from the US must be in quarantine in the UK for six months before entering. Pets can enter Vincentian waters on yachts but must remain onboard at all times unless the above requirements are met.

TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
Pets entering must be declared to Customs on entry. No animal is allowed ashore unless a permit is obtained from the Veterinary Services Division. It’s also essential to have an importation license. This license must be applied for three months prior to travel. In addition, necessary arrangements must be made 24 hours before arrival in order for the dog or cat to be inspected on arrival.
Dogs and cats from the U.S. are required to undergo six-month quarantine at the Quarantine Station. The quarantine time can be shortened to 30 days if three criteria are met: 1) that dogs have a microchip inserted underneath their skin by a vet before the required rabies vaccine, 2) that dogs or cats are vaccinated against rabies within six months but not more than a year before planned travel, and 3) that pets have a blood rabies test one month after vaccination. Permits to allow pets ashore for walking or exercising are not usually issued. For more information, contact: Veterinary Services Division, Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources, St. Clair Circle, St. Clair. Tel: (868) 622-1221; Fax: (868) 622-4240; Email: aphmalmr@tstt.net.tt. For a copy of the importation application form and for further information, visit www.agriculture.gov.tt.

JUNE 2008 St Maarten Dutch Bridge Closure

WARNING: The Simpson Bay Lagoon Bridge on the Dutch Side of St. Maarten (St. Martin) will be undergoing repairs beginning June 9, 2008. The first week will have limited openings, the second week will be completely closed, and thereafter it is planned to have limited bridge openings until the maintenance & repairs are finished.

The Sandy Ground bridge at Marigot on the French side of St. Martin will be open their normal hours.

Here's an excerpt from an article in the local paper, May 30th:

SIMPSON BAY--The lift deck, bearings and struts of the Simpson Bay bridge will be repaired starting Monday, June 9. At least one bridge opening every other day will occur until June 16 when all openings will cease for a week when new struts to support the bridge balancing arms will be installed.

Time to think about summer storms

Just read this from Dr. Jeff Masters' WunderBlog posted at 12:58 PM EDT on May 29, 2008:

Makes me think of "Wrong Way Lenny"...

Tropical Storm Alma, in the Eastern Pacific off the coast of Nicaragua, is steadily intensifying, and appears likely to develop into a hurricane later today. The latest QUikSCAT pass from 8:03am EDT showed winds of 50 knots (58 mph) near the center, and a recent microwave image showed the formation of an eye. Alma is generating very heavy rains in excess of six inches per day near its center.

Looking at the satellite photo, you can see that Anguilla (we are currently anchored in Road Bay) seems to be at the very edge of the bands, which probably explains why it has been overcast all day. Not our typical blue sky and puffy white clouds...

Since Alma now dominates the circulation pattern of the region, none of the computer models are predicting that a tropical depression will form in the Western Caribbean in the coming week. It is possible that Alma could cross Central America and pop out in the Gulf of Mexico's Bay of Campeche. However, the crossing of Central America will severely disrupt the storm, and the odds of Alma becoming a depression in the Atlantic basin are very low... Satellite loops show that Alma has developed a large circulation that extends into the Western Caribbean, and rains from Alma will affect Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and western Cuba through Saturday. These areas can expect heavy downpours with rainfall totals of 3-6 inches through Saturday.

We have friends (Hanalei Bay) bringing us some mail from the USVI in about 10-12 days, but soon as possible afterwards we plan to sail south. It will be nice to go someplace new.

Airlines New Checked Bag Charges and USVI

I just read this article in the St. Thomas Source...

Checked Bag Charge May Dry Up Rum Sales, Hit V.I. Economy
by Molly Morris

May 24, 2008 -- American Airlines' new charge for checked baggage could hobble the Virgin Islands economy, which depends on duty-free liquor sales for a substantial part of its revenue. [CLICK HERE FOR MORE]

Another bit I found interesting was:

Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after May 12, 2008, but before June 15, 2008, may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008 will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag. Carry-on luggage remains the same, with one 40-pound bag at no charge.
There are some exceptions to the charges, such as travelers who purchase full-fare tickets in economy class and those buying business or first class tickets. A complete list can be found in the American Airlines newsletter.

So, book your flights to the Virgin Islands (STT) as soon as possible to keep the cost of your duty-free rum down!
